New Bicycle Bridge Construction

Sunday, Aug. 3, 2008

New bicycle overpasses are under construction in Cupertino, Mountain View and Sunnyvale.  Here are photos taken on a ride today.

Mary Ave. over Highway 280

Mary Avenue in over Highway 280 in Cupertino, taken from the South side.  This suspension bridge  will provide a very direct and quiet route to Homestead High School and DeAnza college, and with any luck will attract many new riders that may not be all that comfortable mixing with heavy traffic on the existing routes.

Stevens Creek Trail at Moffet Blvd

Stevens Creek Trail at Moffett Blvd in Mountain View, looking south back up the exit from Highway 85.
The new bridge will come straight over the position of the crane towards the point the photo is from, paralleling the freeway and crossing both the exit ramp and Moffett.

The trail remains open during the construction, with short detour.

Borregas Avenue and Hwy 237

Borregas Avenue over Hwy 237 in Sunnyvale.   Photo taken from Moffet Park Dr., facing East, at Borregas.

This, plus Borregas over Hwy 101,  will be great additions to the area, as there are no nearby viable alternatives.  Mathilda through the pair of freeway interchanges is truly a nightmare.

Borregas Avenue over 101, Sunnyvale

Borregas Ave bridge over Hwy 101 in Sunnyvale.   Looking East along Ahwanee Ave, the freeway frontage road.

Stevens Creek at Sleeper Ave, Mountain View

Sleeper Ave, Mountain View, looking at Stevens Creek (the actual creek, not the road).

The next section of the Stevens Creek trail to be built will come to here, a point that is far more pleasant to ride to than the current trail end on El Camino, in the middle of the Highway 85 freeway interchange.

Construction is supposed to start later this year.

Stevens Creek Trail End, at El Camino, Mountain View

The Stevens Creek trail ends here, at El Camino.  Straight ahead from here to Sleeper Ave.

Stevens Creek Trail under El Camino, Mountain View

The new Stevens Creek trail tunnel under El Camino, which opened this past April.   Very nice.   Unfortunately, I can't say the same about riding on this part of El Camino, which is for now the only way to get here.

Until the extension to Sleeper  is built, if you want to ride the trail, I suggest picking it up at Mercy or Dana in Mountain View.   Calderon/Phyllis  is a good place to cross El Camino if you are coming from that general direction.
